St. Clair County has an online inmate lookup tool. This is the quickest way to check who is in jail. The system is free to use.

Go to inmates.stclaircounty.org to start. You can search by last name, first name, or booking number. The data refreshes throughout the day. Check back if you do not find who you need.

The St. Clair County jail roster includes these details:

  • Full legal name of the inmate
  • Booking number
  • Booking date
  • Criminal charges filed
  • Bond amount if set
  • Release information when available

The site also has Most Wanted info and a sex offender registry through iCrimewatch. These are separate from the jail roster but helpful for public safety.

The New St. Clair County Jail

A new jail facility opened in 2023. The building is 55,000 square feet. It was built with a modern layout. The jail can hold 323 inmates at one time.

The Pell City jail at 100 18th Street North is the main facility. There is also space in Ashville for certain inmates. The Ashville facility can house juveniles in some cases.

When someone gets arrested, they go to booking. Staff take photos and fingerprints. They record all charges. This info goes into the jail system. It then shows up on the online roster. Per state rules, arrest data must go to the state within 24 hours.

Alabama Jail Record Laws

Jail rosters are public in Alabama. The law is clear on this. Under Alabama Code Section 36-22-8, every sheriff must keep a book of all prisoners. The book shows names, ages, charges, and dates. Anyone can view this book during office hours.

The Alabama Open Records Act in Section 36-12-40 backs this up. State residents can inspect and copy public records. Jail records are public records. Viewing is free. Copies have a small fee.

Not everything is public though. Medical records stay private. Juvenile records are sealed per Alabama Code Section 12-15-133. If a case gets expunged under Section 15-27, those records come off the roster.

Get Jail Records In Person

You can visit either Sheriff's Office location. Bring a valid ID. Staff can look up inmates by name or booking number. This works well for older records or if the website is down.

For copies of records, ask the clerk. There may be a fee. Most agencies charge around one dollar per page. Certified copies cost more. The clerk will tell you the exact price.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. The jail runs all day and night. Call ahead if you have questions. Use the Pell City number at 205-884-6840 or Ashville at 205-594-2140.

Submit Crime Tips

The Sheriff's Office takes tips from the public. If you have info about a crime, you can report it. Tips can help solve cases and find wanted people.

Call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. You can stay anonymous. The Sheriff's website also has a tip form. Visit stclairsheriff.org for more details.

State Prison and VINE

The county roster shows local inmates. If someone gets transferred to state prison, they leave the county system. You will not see them on the St. Clair roster anymore.

To find state inmates, go to doc.alabama.gov/inmatesearch. This is the Alabama Department of Corrections search. Enter a name or ADOC number. It shows where the inmate is held.

Victims can use Alabama VINE. This system sends alerts when an inmate moves or gets released. Sign up at vinelink.com. You can get calls, texts, or emails. It is free to use.
